Lady Wolverines roll to win

Waverly’s Liia Carpenter takes a shot on goal during Wednesday night’s game. Dave Post/Morning Times WAVERLY — Homestanding Waverly scored early and often Wednesday night, rolling to an 8-0 Interscholastic Athletic Conference win over Odessa-Montour at Waverly Memorial Stadium.

Dani Burkhart started the scoring just 1:02 into the contest and ended the first-half scoring 10:08 into the period off a corner kick by Liia Carpenter.

In between, Liia Carpenter scored at the 8:38 mark of the half and Jenna Bowman added a goal at the 12:28 mark.

Kylie Newman made it 5-0 in the second half with a goal 6:30 into the half and, after Bowman scored at the eight-minute mark, made it 7-0 with a goal at the 12:30 mark. Waverly’s final tally was a goal by Shelby Tubbs, off a Carpenter assist, at 39:20.

Pressure was the name of the game for the Lady Wolverines, who sent 45 shots at the Indians’ goal and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Odessa-Montour keeper Kristha Bryan made nine saves, some spectacular, while Waverly goalie Allie Frutchey stopped the only shot she faced.

Now 7-1, Waverly has a few days off before hosting Tioga Central at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Notre Dame 7, Tioga 0

Rachel Lamoreaux had a hat trick and Detta Gublo scored twice to lead Notre Dame past Tioga Central in an IAC game.

Lamoreaux wrapped up the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal with 4:34 remaining in the half. That goal made it 3-0, coming after Olivia Hoover scored off a Gublo assist with 26:57 left in the half and Allegra Dawes scored off a Mary Kubinski assist at the 9:50 mark.

Lamoreaux opened the second-half scoring for ND, hitting the net at the 27:31 mark and finished the night’s scoring off a Hoover assist with 4:41 to play. Gublo had the two middle goals of the second half, scoring off assists from Elizabeth Ike assist with 20:58 remaining and Dawes with 14:55 to play.

Notre Dame took 24 shots at the Tigers’ goal to one shot for Tioga Central and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Tioga goalie Hannah Manwaring had 15 saves and the Crusaders’ keeper, Sheridan Heine, made one save.

Tioga Central visits Candor at 4:30 p.m. today.

Athens 12, Williamson 1

Six Athens players recorded their first-ever varsity goals in Wednesday’s road rout of overmatched Williamson.

Emily Casterline, normally Athens’ goalie, scored the first two goals of her varsity career Wednesday with Danielle Stopper, Danielle Dougherty, Hailey Priester, Allison Vine, and Lizzie Reid each getting her first varsity goal.

Kirsten Colegrove had two goals for the Lady Wildcats. Also scoring a goal each for Athens were Rachael Donnelly, Kiersten Horton and Monica Dougherty.

Recording two assists each for Athens were Emily Patton, Mackenzie Warner, Mackenzie Vargason and Monica Dougherty. Horton and Meghan Hurley had one assist each.

For Williamson, Christina McCall scored on a penalty kick.

Athens visits Mansfield Friday night, playing under the lights at Mansfield University as part of the 1890s weekend celebration. The Athens JVs will play at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
