Warren Howeler/Morning Times SAYRE — Sayre Borough Mayor Denny Thomas said at this week’s council meeting that he is looking for the public’s help in restoring three monuments in the 100-year-old Howard Elmer Park.
The structures in question are the water fountain, the Lehigh Valley Railroad monument and the “Doughboy” statue that honors those local residents who have served in the military.
“The water fountain on the east end of the park is in bad shape,” said Thomas.
The roof over the LVRR monument is also deteriorating, Thomas noted.
“I would like to another roof put on there if possible,” he said. Thomas said he is seeking any donations of materials and time from people who are interested in helping restore these monuments.
“Any donations would be welcome,” he said. “Anything that we can get to help restore some of this stuff and fix it up.”
Bellis Monuments will handle the repairs to the “Doughboy” monument this spring, said Thomas.
“It is such a beautiful park and some of this stuff, we just take it for granted,” he said.
In addition, the issue was sent to the borough’s public works committee for further discussion to determine the specific repairs that need to completed to the park’s monuments.
Anyone who is interested in helping with these projects are asked to contact the Sayre Borough Hall at 570-888-7739.
