George H. Loomis, 69

George H. Loomis, 69, of 130 North East Street, Sayre, Pa., passed away early Tuesday morning, March 13, 2012 at his home following an extended illness.

George was born in Waverly, N.Y., on August 25, 1942, the son of the late Jack and Helen Saylor Loomis. He was a graduate of Sayre High School class of 1960 and later served in the US Air Force from February 1, 1961 to January 29, 1965 during the Vietnam War.

George was employed by the Ingersoll Rand in Athens for two years and subsequently was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad, which later became Conrail. He began working on the railroad as a yard hostler advancing to fireman and then engineer. On June 4, 1980, he married the former Jeanne Ball in Wysox, Pa. George later served as parts manager for Barnes Chrysler Plymouth until declining health no longer permitted him to continue.

He was a member of the Ascension of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sayre, Skiff-Bower VFW Post No. 1536, Sayre, Sayre Elks Lodge and Ball-Skerpon Catholic War Vets Post.

George enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, hunting and BMX Bike Racing with his children. He also enjoyed drag racing, stock cars, NASCAR and was an avid Boston Red Socks fan.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Loomis; children, George N. Loomis of Sayre, Jackie M. Loomis of Sayre, Lauren J. Loomis of Winchester, Va., Mary Carman and husband Steve of Elkland, Pa., Amy Loomis of Elkland, Pa.; grandchildren, Marrissa Loomis and Logan Carman; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jack Brotherton of Ione, Calif.; brother, John J. Loomis of Reading, Pa.; brother and sisterin law, Michael J. and Linda Loomis of Sayre; mother-in-law, Joan Ball of Sayre; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Philip Ball, Nick S. and Patti Ball, Susan and David Seck, Joan and Ron Fairlie and Maureen Ball all of Sayre; several nieces, nephews and cousins; lifelong friends, Richard Farr of Waverly, N.Y., and Edward Garrity of Sayre.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-inlaw, Nick Ball.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alteri Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre, Pa. A Para Stas service will be held at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Panakhyda service will be held Friday, March 16, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at the Ascension of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, North Higgins Ave. in Sayre with the Rev. Teodor B. Czabala Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Athens Twp., Pa., with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors.
