ATHENS -- Potential merger talks will continue between representatives from the Athens and Sayre Area School districts, according to Athens Superintendent Craig Stage.
Stage stated after Monday's Athens School Board meeting that the initial informal session between representatives from both districts was "very positive."
That initial meeting involved Stage, Athens School Board President John Johnson IV, Sayre Superintendent Dr. Sherry Griggs and Sayre School Board President Andrew Hickey.
"We are going to include a larger group (of board members) next time," said Stage. "We are going to take it informal and take it a very slow and deliberate approach."
Also during Monday's meeting, board members voted 6-1 to accept the resignation of Mike Shaw as the interim junior varsity boys' basketball coach.
Shaw's resignation comes six days after he was appointed by the board to fill that position.
No reason for Shaw's resignation was provided at Monday's meeting.
Voting in favor of accepting Shaw's resignation was Johnson and board members Lonnie Stethers, Gayle Burkett, Jamie Westbrook, Kathy Jo Minnick and Joe Joyce. Board member Charles Frisbie cast the lone "nay" vote on the measure.
Board Vice President Karen Whyte and board member John Cheresnowsky were absent from Monday's meeting.
Stage noted that the district will be publicly advertising later this week for candidates to serve as the interim junior varsity boys' basketball coach.
The next meeting of the Athens School Board will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in the district's administrative office on Canal Street in Athens Borough. The public is invited to attend.
