SMITHFIELD -- Smithfield Township Supervisors Tuesday adopted an ordinance to give the green light for the Athens Area School District's school resource officer position at SRU Elementary School to move forward.
The ordinance allows jurisdiction for the Athens Township Police Department to provide an officer for coverage within the municipality, but township Solicitor Pat Barrett noted that it doesn't provide for officers to "set up speed traps or anything like that."
Additionally, the passage of the ordinance "costs nothing" to Smithfield residents, Barrett added.
In terms of next year's budget, supervisors noted that after review of the overall spending plan and current tax rates at their Oct. 23 work session, and will feature no further changes for next year.
There will be no tax rate increase for 2019.
