Waverly, N.Y. -

A large crowd gathered in the Waverly Presbyterian Church social hall after the regular services Sunday afternoon to enjoy a homemade spaghetti dinner.
For $6 diners enjoyed tossed salad, spaghetti, bread, and a beverage, all prepared by church member Terry McNeal and a small handful of other volunteers.
The proceeds from the meal were donated to Judy Heim, another church member, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
McNeal explained yesterday that Heim already deals with several other health problems, including diabetes, and “is at that age where she doesn’t have any health insurance.”
“Her doctor told her her hospital bills could be over $150,000 by the time she’s done with all her treatments,” McNeal added.
Doing what they could to help a friend in need, McNeal and the other volunteers organized yesterday’s dinner on short notice. Even with little time to prepare and not much in the way of publicity, the group still managed to put together a Chinese auction to be held in conjunction with yesterday’s benefit. McNeal reported that the volunteers had assembled about 35 baskets, and several local residents donated baked goods and auctionable items as well.
“We just heard what was going on and wanted to do something to help,” said McNeal. “(Heim)’s having a tough time right now. We’re doing what we can to make it easier.”
