Sayre, Pa. -

Many not only came together for a good meal Thursday at the First Church of God on Keystone Avenue, but also to share in the spirit of giving the Legacy has inspired within the Valley for seven years now.
The Legacy is an annual summer event held on the grounds of the Waverly High School that raises money for a variety of local charitable endeavors. Most notably, funds raised through the event recently aided the purchase of a new dialysis machine at the Robert Packer Hospital.
This year’s event featured a new children’s fund set up in 11-year-old Danielle Belles’ name, who returned to the Legacy for a fourth year with $140 raised through her own efforts; the debut of the Sayre Salvation Army canteen; a first ever Wedding Link of Michael and Deanna Marino, in memory of the late Leroy Woodruff and in support of organ donation; and a large group of family and friends walking the track in memory of the late Matthew Kraft.
Legacy President Joyce Hoagland took time out after the meal to personally recognize everyone who made this year’s event possible and to thank them, with everyone taking time to return the gratitude toward Hoagland and her sister Janet, who are the main organizers of the event each year.
Legacy Second Vice President Joel Clawson stated, “None of us would be here without the Hoagland sisters . . . Thank you ladies for the lives that you’ve touched, many you probably don’t even realize, and some that you save. You do a wonderful thing and you motivate us, and we’re here because of you.”
“You guys have really touched my heart,” said Edward Meek, who donated his time as Blade, the Elmira Jackals’ mascot.
An emotional Meek continued to praise the Legacy and the Valley community for how people go out of their way to help each other out.
The youth in attendance were also recognized for their contributions to the event in setting up the play area near the track. Hoagland also recognized them as the future of the event.
“You guys are absolutely amazing,” remarked Legacy contributor Dee Woodruff.
“People ask me how much money did we raise?” said Hoagland. “I can accurately say put a price on family, put a price on friendship, put a price on people getting together and joining in as friends.”
“We know what we are doing is helping,” she added.
