Rodney (Tom) Fred Briggs, 90, of Sayre, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at home surrounded by his family.
He was the loving husband of the late Marie Farley Briggs, who passed away on Nov. 17, 1997. Tom and Marie were married on April 18, 1953 and raised five children on Hopkins Street in Sayre.
Tom was born on April 28, 1927 in Sayre to Myron and Margaret Middaugh Briggs. He grew up to be a hard-working man, who, at the age of 15, left school after his father passed to financially support his mother and siblings. In 1945, he was drafted into the army and was deployed to Udine, Italy. When he returned, he continued working for the railroad and raised his family until he retired. He served on the VFW color guard for 40 years and was best known for playing Santa Claus for over thirty years. He received his honorary diploma from Sayre Area High School in 2010. He loved spending time with his family, reading western novels, going to yard sales, and taking very long walks around the Valley.
Tom is survived by children, John Briggs of Waverly, New York, Diane Briggs Sindoni and husband Andy of Athens, Pa., Teresa Briggs Draper and husband Mike of Lockwood, N.Y., Kathy Briggs Crews of Sayre, Pa., and Patricia Briggs deClercq of Johnson City, N. Y.; grandchildren, David and wife Michelle Briggs, Dawn Briggs Nietopski, Erica Briggs, Neil and wife Alyssa Briggs, Nicole Briggs Gardner and husband Jeremy, Thomas Briggs and wife Heather, Elizabeth Crews, and Matthew Crews; great-grandchildren, David Michael Briggs, Joseph Nietopski, Nicholas Briggs, Madyson Briggs, Bryce Campbell, Emma Briggs, Riley Campbell, Landon Briggs, and Maddox Briggs. He is also survived by other close relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie Farley Briggs; siblings, Leon Briggs and wife Rose of Reading, Pa., John Briggs of Reading, Pa., Glen Briggs of Texas, Howard Briggs and wife Ruth from Sayre, Pa., Ray Briggs and wife Nellie of Sayre, Pa., Margaret (Peg) Briggs Cannivano and husband Mike of Sayre, Pa., Betty Briggs Sherman and husband Ed of Barton, N.Y., and Helen Briggs Pedini and husband Louis of Florida; and daughter-in-law Linda Briggs of Waverly, N.Y.
A time of calling will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 from 11 to 1 p.m. at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly. Full military honors will be accorded Tom at 1 p.m. at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly by the Valley Color Guard. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
