Howard Henry Shaw, 88, of Towanda, Pa. passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Guthrie Towanda Memorial Personal Care Home.
Howard was born April 24, 1931, in Towanda the 6th of 8 children to William Henry Shaw and Helen Stephenson Shaw. Howard graduated from Towanda High School with the class of 1950. He was employed by the A&P Supermarket in Towanda at the age of 19 and subsequently became employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda where he worked for 38 years before retiring in 1990.
In 1956, Howard married Barbara North in Athens, PA. Together they raised 3 children. Barbara preceded him in death in March of 1993. Howard was one of the founders of Ponytail Softball that provided girls the opportunity to play organized sports in Towanda.
Prior to this, Howard volunteered to coach boys Little League and was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. Howard served as tax assessor in Towanda for many years. Howard enjoyed traveling, researching and learning about local history, attending auctions and getting a bargain. He was also an avid gardener and loved to cut wood.
Howard was a 65 year member of Union-Wyalusing Lodge No. 108 F.&A.M. and Northern Commandery No. 16 Knights Templar, Towanda. He also held membership with Union Royal Arch Chapter No. 161, Bradford County Shrine Club, Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191, Sylvania Men’s Club and the Sylvania Quarter Century Club.
Howard is survived by his children, William Alan Shaw and wife Karen of Towanda, Becky Shaw of Northampton, Ma., Leslie Shaw of Carlisle, Pa., grandchildren, Heidi Krise and husband Scott, Joel Dietz and wife Erin, Carlie Antes, Lizzy Antes, Bailey Coston-Shaw, Meghan Coston-Shaw, Sam Coston-Shaw, great grandchildren, Dylan and Dustin Krise, Lexie and Carson Dietz, Ethan and Ayla Miller, siblings, Beverly (Hayward) Coldiron, Bill Shaw, Jack (Joanna) Shaw, sister-in-law, Beverly Barton as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Howard was also predeceased in death by his siblings, Eleanor Ackley, Phyllis McNutt, William Shaw, and Janet Allyn and by his partner Jean Lundy in 2016.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 10, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home 217 York Ave. Towanda, Pa. Union-Wyalusing Lodge No. 108 will hold a Masonic funeral service Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a memorial service with the Rev. Robert W. Martin officiating. Interment will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.
