Doris Marie Sackett of Barton, surrounded by family, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 14, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Bernard “Bucky” and Veda Hendershot of Barton. Doris was the first female police and fire dispatcher for the Waverly Police Dept. She worked 19 years at Lockheed Martin in Owego until taking an early retirement due to a decline in her health. She loved to rollerskate and just spend time with her family and friends. She was an inspiration to so many people. She will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives she touched.
She was the loving wife to Stephen Sackett for 23 years and the beloved mother of Sue (Steve) Buman of Susquehanna, Pa., Marylou (John) Darrah of Barton, Colleen (Larry) Miner of Sayre, Tony (Melanie) Miller of Watkins Glen, and stepchildren Steve (Heejing) Sackett of Ft. Hood, Texas, and Shane Sackett of Barton. She is survived by brother Bernard “Corky” (Colette) Hendershot of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Loretta Grace and Pat Sindoni. She raised a granddaughter, Danelle Forbes.
At the request of the family, they would appreciate no flowers. As Doris requested, in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to Chemung Christian Fellowship Church, 726 Main St., Chemung, NY 14825, or Lourdes Hospice, 169 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, NY 13905. A time for gathering with family and friends will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008 at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad St., Waverly. The celebration of Doris’s life will follow the visitation, with the Rev. Randy Stilson honoring her memory at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Those wishing to do so may send a sympathy message of remembrance for Doris’s family in “obituaries” at www.blauveltfuneralhome.com.
