Virginia Quatrini 89, loving wife, mother and friend and longtime Sayre resident passed away on August 17, 2008. She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany.
Virginia was born in Endicott, N.Y. on January 29, 1919 the fifth child of Nicola and Rosa Belziti DiTota. She spent her childhood in Owego, NY where her parents owned and operated an Italian restaurant “The Venetian Garden” and a grocery store.
In September 1937 she married Joseph T, Quatrini of Sayre and shortly thereafter moved to Milltown where they raised their family. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face. Over the years she crocheted miles of tablecloths, afghans, stuffed toys and Christmas ornaments which she bestowed as gifts to family and friends. Autumn in the Quatrini house revolved around harvesting the bounty of her large vegetable garden and canning, freezing and otherwise preserving everything possible to enjoy over the winter. She proudly shared these with visitors.
Virginia and her husband Joe were hosts to frequent family gatherings at their home. In her later years she became an avid Yankees fan.
She and her husband were longtime members of the Herbert S. Maddy Corral and the Triple R Riding Club and she enjoyed cooking and baking for all whenever the group gathered for meetings. Virginia sold Vanda cosmetics and beauty products for several years and made many friends along the way. She also found time to serve as a crossing guard on her corner in Milltown guiding the elementary school children on their way to school.
She was predeceased by an infant daughter Roscann in 1957, her husband of 54 years, Joe, in 1992, her granddaughter Sheila Catlin in 1997, her parents and her four siblings Mike DiTota; Josephine Longo; Nancy Longo and Lena Deacon.
She is survived by her daughter Angie Van Ness and her husband Dick of Henrietta, NY; her son Lou Quatrini and his wife Jackie of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; her daughter Nancy Herrera and her husband Ben of Henrietta, NY; her son Joe Quatrini and his wife Susan of Sayre and her son Phillip and his wife Alison of McLean, Va. She was known as “Naunie” to her eight grandchildren who survive her: Roseann Bruner and husband Tim of Penfield, NY; Bill Van Ness and Catherine Swan of Scottsville, NY; Brian Herrera and his wife Donna of Henrietta, NY; Ben Herrera of Falls Church, Va.; Joe Quatrini and his wife Michele of Litchfield; Sarah Quatrini of Sayre,; “PJ” Quatrini of McLean, Va.; Katherine Quatrini of McLean Va. and Mike Catlin of Nokesville, Va.
She was blessed to also have eight great-grandchildren who survive her: Nick Bruner, Dan and Grace Anne Van Ness, Alex Herrera, Mikey and Suzanne Catlin, Lucas Quatrini and Leah Quatrini.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond Street, Sayre. A vigil prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Please gather at the Church of the Epiphany at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning for her Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow at Epiphany Cemetery.
