Snapshots from the Past

Sayre’s Engine Company No. 1 sponsored fish floats on the Susquehanna River beginning in 1991 and for many subsequent years, continuing the fish floats that had been initiated by a group headed by Carl Shay. The photo above shows the start of one of the fire company’s fish floats at the Sayre Access of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission on Riverside Drive where the Susquehanna River touches Litchfield Township. Summer fish floats were conducted as the Mid-Summer Fish Floats. Fall fish floats carried the name of Flaming Foliage Fish Floats. The fish floats were conducted under a permit from the Pennsylvania Fish Commission. At that time Ted Keir of Athens was one of their commissioners. In the early years the fish floats ended at the Ulster Bridge where various categories of prizes were awarded. Later they ended at Larnard-Hornbrook County Park. Photo provided by Jim Nobles
