Big early deficit leads to Waverly loss

Waverly’s Bryce LaForrest tries to beat out a bunt during his team’s Majors game against Horseheads on Friday.

WAVERLY — Horseheads used four singles, a double and three errors to score eight first-inning runs on the way to a 12-1 win over Waverly in District 6 Little League Majors play.

Horseheads hitters had three home runs and two doubles in the contest.

Waverly scored in the bottom of the first. Kohen Hugo opened the bottom of the first inning with a single. After taking second on a passed ball, Hugo went to third on a ground out and scored on an error. Lincoln Sharpsteen lined a double in a bid to reignite the rally but was left stranded.

Another Hugo single was the only other hit the home team could muster.

Hugo started on the mound for Waverly. Of the nine runs he allowed on seven hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings, just one was earned. Bryce LaForest allowed four hits and three runs, of which two were earned, in 1 2/3 innings.

Waverly (2-2) will host Corning-Painted Post at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
