HORNELL — Waverly’s Little League Majors put together a spirited rally but fell just shy Friday in 6-4 a District 6 quarterfinal defeat at Hornell.
Hornell scored three runs in the first inning on three walks, a single and a two-run double.
Waverly made it a one-run game with a two-out rally in the top of the third. Andrew Larrabee walked and stole second. Kohen Hugo followed with an RBI single and eventually made it to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Hornell scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of walks touched off the inning and an error allowed a run to score. There was still one runner on base two outs later, but an RBI double and an RBI single sent the other two runners home.
Waverly made a run at Hornell in the top of the sixth. Aiden Doherty opened the inning with a base hit. After an out, Jerry Carnrike and Logan Roskow walked to load the bases. Hornell got the second out, and then Ben Shaw ripped a two-run single. A wild pitch put Roskow and Shaw into scoring position, but Hornell was able to strand them there for the win.
Each team had four hits. For Waverly, Shaw had a single and two RBIs; Hugo had a single, a run and an RBI; and Dogherty matched Lincoln Sharpsteen with a single each. Larrabee scored twice for Waverly with Kohen and Carnrike the other scorers.
Kayden Whitney started on the mound for Waverly. In his three innings, he allowed three hits, six walks and four earned runs while striking out five batters. Doherty came on for one inning and allowed two walks, one hit and two unearned runs. Hugo finished up on the hill for Waverly allowing two walks and striking out a batter.
