SAYRE — Wellsboro opened the best-of-three District 15 Little League Juniors series well, topping Sayre on the road 9-1 in a game that started Saturday and, after being suspended by rain, finished up on Sunday.
The teams will meet at Wellsboro at 5:30 p.m. today in the second game of the series.
Each team scored a run in the first inning on Saturday. The difference was that Wellsboro kept putting runs on the board while Sayre was struggling to do the same.
Sayre didn’t give up any big innings — Wellsboro had three two-run innings — but got nibbled to death as Wellsboro scored in every inning but one
Will Kibier started the game off with a triple for Wellsboro and subsequently scored.
Sayre tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Zach Garrity singled and circled the bases.
Andrew Merriman doubled and scored in the second inning for Wellsboro, and Kibier walked and scored in the third.
What really hurt the home team were two runs innings for Wellsboro in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Sayre also had a hard time nailing down the pitching of Cameron Bought who kept the local side off balance all weekend.
Kibier led Wellsboro with a triple and three runs scored,; Bought had two singles and two runs scored; Merriman had a double and a run; and Blake Levindoski had a single and two runs.
Zack Garrity had two singles and a run to lead Sayre’s attack.
