SAYRE — Wellsboro and Sayre went back and forth in Friday night’s Elimination Bracket contest. In the end, Wellsboro got the last run and with it downed Sayre 6-5.
Sayre was cruising in the bottom of the sixth inning of a tie game with two strikeouts to open the inning. Then Madden Moselo reached with a single and a few pitches later, Griffin Mozal came through with an RBI single to end the game and ended Sayre’s season.
After matching each other run-for-run through the first two innings, Wellsboro pulled ahead with a run in the third inning.
Sayre tied the game in the fourth inning only to see Wellsboro take a 5-3 lead with two runs in the fifth.
Sayre answered those with two in the top of the sixth but couldn’t keep their guests off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
Sayre scored first when Brendan Cooke walked and came around for a run.
Wellsboro matched that when a Mozal singled and later scored.
Cameron Ross walked and scored for Sayre in the second, and then R.J. Doughty did the same for Wellsboro.
In the third, it was Mozal again reaching base and giving Wellsboro a 3-2 lead.
Sayre’s fourth inning included a walk to Ty Owen who later scored on an RBI single by Cooke.
In the Wellsboro fifth, Mozal singled and scored on an RBI double by Coen Tennis. Tennis later rounded the bases for a run as well.
In Sayre’s sixth, Chase Wheeler, Owen and Jacob Gorsline opened the inning with singles. Wheeler and Owen scored to tie the game only to see Wellsboro get the walk-off single in the bottom of the inning.
Mozal had two singles and three runs to lead Wellsboro. Tennis had a double, a run and an RBI and Moselo had a single and a run.
For Sayre, Cooke led the way with a single, a run and an RBI. Ross, Wheeler and Owen had a single and a run each. Brady Flynn and Gorsline each had a single.
On the mound, Flynn and Maison Apgar combined to strike out six and walk three.
