WAVERLY — Down 6-2, Waverly scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 7-6 win in District 6 Little League Majors play Wednesday.
Kohen Hugo got the party started with a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch. Ben Shaw with an RBI single and went to second on the throw home. Logan Roskow reached on a walk and, with Shaw already at third, took second uncontested. That set the table for Andrew Larrabee who laced a two-run double to center and then scored the tying run on an error. At bat when Larrabee scored, Kayden Whitney laced a double to center and came home with the winning run on a single by Nate Kellogg.
Elmira scored three times in the top of the first, but Waverly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Hugo got that rally started with a walk and went to second on an error that let Shaw on base. Both runners advanced on an error and Hugo scored on a wild pitch. With two gone in the inning and Shaw standing on third, another wild pitch allowed him to scamper home.
Larrabee led Waverly with his two-run double and scored a run. Shaw had a single, two runs and one RBI; and Hugo had a single and two runs. Whitney had a double and an RBI; Kellogg had a single and an RBI; and Roskow scored a run.
Elmira scored once in the second and twice in the top of the fifth before Waverly’s big inning.
Lincoln Sharpsteen started on the mound for Waverly allowing one hit, five walks, and four runs with three earned in 1 1/3 innings. In his 3 2/3 innings, Whitney allowed two hits, two walks and two earned runs with seven strikeouts. Hugo finished up by allowing one hit and fanning two in an inning of work.
Waverly will host Horseheads at 6 p.m. on Friday.
