WYALUSING — Athens rallied but fell a touch short Tuesday, dropping a 5-3 decision to RTL in District 15 Little League Majors play.
RTL jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and made it 5-0 in the fifth. Athens rallied in the bottom of that inning but fell short in its comeback effort.
Facing a 5-0 deficit, Athens started off its half of the fifth inning well when Riley Campbell singled. Two outs later, Carson Rowe singled to send Campbell to third. Rowe took second on a wild pitch and both scored on an error off the bat of Troy Rosenbloom. After Rosenbloom took second on a passed ball, Matt Driesbaugh lined an RBI single to left.
The rally stalled there, though, and Athens couldn’t get much going in the sixth.
Hits were tough to come by for both teams. Rowe led Athens with two singles and a run. Rosenbloom matched Campbell with a single and a run each; Driesbaugh had a single and an RBI; and Brady Dawson had a single.
Nick Grazul started on the hill for Athens. He allowed three hits, one walk, three runs, and one earned run. He struck out nine in four innings.
Rowe took over and allowed three hits and a walk. Neither of the two runs he allowed were earned and he fanned four in 1 2/3 innings. Rosenbloom came on and allowed one hit before getting the final out.
