WAVERLY — Corning erupted for nine runs in the last two innings to post an 11-1 win Sunday morning in District 6 Little League Majors play.
Down a run, Waverly manufactured a run. Lincoln Sharpsteen opened the inning with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Kaden Whitney joined Sharpsteen on base with another walk. Each runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, but then CPP recorded a pair of outs. Just when it looked like the visitors might get away unscathed Sharpsteen scored on a wild pitch.
That tied the game at 1-1, but Corning took a 2-1 lead in the third.
The next two Corning-Painted Post at bats resulted in nine runs and ended the game after five innings.
Kept off balance all game, Waverly’s batters managed just three hits.
Andrew Larrabee had a double for Waverly with Whitney and Kohen Hugo adding a single each.
Whitney started on the hill for Waverly. In four innings, he allowed four runs, three hits and six runs. Just two of the runs were earned and Whitney struck out seven batters. Carter Davies came in for the final inning and allowed three hits and five unearned runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Waverly will travel to Hornell on Tuesday.
