TIOGA CENTER — Brady Worthing allowed just three hits and fanned 11 as Tioga blanked Groton 9-0 in the first round of the Section IV Class C baseball playoffs Friday afternoon.
Worthing allowed one double and two harmless singles and got out of a small jam in the fifth with an infield fly, a grounder to second and a strikeout.
The Tigers’ offense got going in the second inning when Thomas Cook reached base on a two-out single, advanced on a walk to Derrick Barto and scored on an RBI single by Christian Weaver.
In the third, Mason Booser was plunked with one out, and John Worthing walked. Both moved up a base on a balk before Derrick Gage’s two-tun single sent them home.
The game really got out of hand in the fourth inning. Barto and Weaver singled to open the inning. Barto went to third on an error, and Weaver stole second to set the table for Seth Franks who came through with a two-run single. Pierce Hendershot added an RBI double for a 6-0 Tioga lead.
Meanwhile, Worthing just kept getting stronger and cutting the Indians down.
Groton nearly got on the board first. Nate Turner reached on a fielder’s choice and tried to score on a Cameron Hamilton double but was thrown out at the plate. After that, the only Groton runners to reach base were Mason Reynolds and Emmett Crispell. The two hit back-to-back singles in the fifth before Worthing settled in to get the next three hitters out without a ball leaving the infield.
Gage had two singles and two RBIs for to lead Tioga at the plate. Weaver added two singles, a run and an RBI for the Tigers; Barto had two singles and a run; and Cook also had two singles.
Also for Tioga, Franks had a single, two RBIs and a run; Hendershot and John Worthing had matching lines with a double, RBI and a run each; Booser scored twice; and Brady Worthing had an RBI.
