ATHENS— Athens’ 9-11 Little League All-Stars kept rolling in pool play Friday improving to 3-0 with an 8-2 win over Endless Mountains.

After setting Endless Mountains down in order in the top of the first, Athens manufactured two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Cooper Robinson beat out a roller to start the inning. After an out, Matthias Welles beat out an infield hit. Catcher’s interference put Charan Venkataswamy on to load the bases and Cylus Lantz got an RBI the hard way when he was hit by a pitch. With two down, Welles scored on a wild pitch.

A James Friend walk and a double by Robinson set Athens up in the second inning. Karson Sipley laced an RBI single and Welles clubbed a two-run double.

Endless Mountains got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, but Athens increased its lead in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Sipley and Welles had back-to-back singles. With the pair on second and third, Sipley scored on a dropped third strike and Wells raced home on a wild pitch.

Athens added another run in the fifth on a walk to Alex Arcesi and an RBI single by Friend.

Endless Mountains added a run in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t nearly enough to erase the deficit.

With Welles leading the way, the first third of Athens’ batting order did most of the damage. Welles had two singles, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sipley had two singles, two runs and an RBI; and Robinson added a single, a double and two runs. Friend added a single, a run and one RBI.

Welles started on the mound for Athens, pitching three very efficient innings and fanning seven batters with his 39 pitches. Robinson went 2 2/3 innings allowing three hits and an earned run with four strikeouts. Venkataswamy gave up three hits and an earned run but got the final out.

Athens wraps up pool play at Tunkhannock on Sunday. Both enter the game undefeated.
