The Athens Little League Majors had a tough day on Wednesday with a 4-3 loss to Corning A.
Athens started off the game on a high note at the top of the first inning when Troy Stivason hit a strong double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Tyler Birdsall grounded out and sent Stivason in for the first run of the game. Corning made an attempt to score in the bottom of the first, but Athens shut them down.
In the third inning Athens’ Birdsall hit an infield single. Teammate Emily Myers walked. Adam Felt was up next and hit a double to left field which gave Birdsall a straight shot home as Myers moved to third. Tyler Forbes laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt which sent Myers in. Athens was ahead 3-0.
Corning answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tyler Dillon hit a double to right field. Tyler Mayo hit a single that scored Dillon and Mayo moved to second on an error. Case hit a sacrifice fly to center that moved Mayo to third. Jacob Eighmey hit a ground out to score Mayo.
Corning sealed the deal for their win in the bottom of the sixth inning when Dillon hit a home run. Mayo was able to reach first on an error. Case and Eighmy were walked to load the bases. Mayo scored the winning run on a passed ball to end the game.
Pitching for Corning was Jarret Updyke who pitched four innings and had four strikeouts and four walks before Jordan Prisella took over for the last two innings. He added two strikeouts.
Hitters for Corning were Dillon with a home run, a double, an RBI and two runs; Mayo with a single, an RBI and two runs; Derek Fie with a single and Eighmey with an RBI.
Pitching for Athens was Myers who pitched 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and a walk before Tyler Forbes took over for the rest of the game.
Hitters were Stivason with a double and a run, Birdsall with a single, and RBI and a run; Myers with a run, Felt with a double, a single and an RBI and Forbes with an RBI.
