Some of the best senior ladies golfers converged on The Club at Shepard Hills Tuesday for the 55th Annual Women’s Senior Finger Lakes Golf Tournament. When the tourney was over, the host club had the low medalist and had used its home-course advantage to take the team title to boot.
Representatives of 13 of the Finger Lakes Region’s 18 country clubs made the trip to The Club at Shepard Hills, with 11 participating in the team championship.
Although Ithaca’s Judy Mehrer took the title of low net with a 70, Sharon Volante topped the field with the low gross score of 85 to win the championship. Volante also led the Shepard Hills team to the team title with a final score of 383. Joining Volante on the Shepard Hills team were Libby Dolan, who finished with a 93, Linda Smith, who shot 100 and tournament chairperson Joan Kuchta, who had a 105.
Elmiran Jeri Moore had a net 74 in the championship flight, followed by Janice Hart of Cortland and Ithaca’s C. Drinkwater with matching 75s. Dolan and Sodus Bay golfer Judy Procious were next with 76s.
The First Flight went to Becky Wisniewski, with the low gross of 96 and Matson, who had a net of 73.
Joanne Laux took the low gross title in the Second Flight with a 100 and Cortland’s Betay Deline had a net of 71 to take that title.
Ithacan Sally Clayton had the best net score in the Third Flight with a 71 and local golfer Kuchta took the low gross with her 105.
The Senior Flight net winner, local golfer Carol Pientka, also won the title for fewest putts with just 28. Nan Demuth had the low gross in the flight with a 100.
In addition to the awards presented to the winners in each flight, the group also recognized the oldest golfer in the event. This year that honor went to Barb Nail, who finished second to Pientka in the Senior Flight.
