Waverly’s Lady Wolverines posted some fast times and good distances Friday at the Ithaca Relays, placing third in the event behind winner Ithaca, with 74 points and second-place Vestal, which had 63 points. Waverly totaled 44 points, with Corning and Binghamton rounding out the top five.
“It was an awesome day,” said Waverly coach Scott Baird. “Those main girls — Erika Kisel, Cat Hursh and Kayla Hager — did a lot of our scoring, as did Mariah Brown and Autumn Johnson. It was amazing.”
Placing first were Waverly’s 1,600-meter relay, which had a season-best time of 4:08.01 with Brown, Kisel, Hager and Hursh on the squad and Waverly’s 800-meter relay team of Hursh, Brown, Johnson and Kisel, which ran a 1:48.09. Shannon Seager and Hager soared to 9-feet, 10-inches in the high jump to win that event.
Also posting a season-best time was the 400-meter relay squad of Johnson, Hursh, Cassie Myers and Kisel, who turned in a time of 51.03 to place second. Also taking second places were the discus relay team of Keiran Raupers and Maureen Gilette, who had a combined 171-feet, and 11-inches and the triple jump relay team of Shannon Seager and Autumn Johnson, who combined for a distance of 62-feet, 2 1/2-inches.
Also, Waverly’s shot put relay team of Raupers and Kelly Hawthorne took third with a distance of 59-feet, 8 1/4-inches.
What made the finishes more impressive was the competition.
“(Along with Dryden) we are the only team there considered to be a small school,” said Baird. “They were fantastic with their performances.”
Of course, the next big event for the lady Wolverines will be Tuesday when Lansing hosts Waverly for an Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division I showdown.
