Athens’ Covey low medalist, but day belongs to Knights

Athens’ Chris Covey took home low medalist honors Monday with a 77 in the first league match of the 2008 Northern Tier League golf season, but Towanda’s superior balance won the day at The Club at Shepard Hills.
The Black Knights, led by Jordan Wollenberg’s 80, were the only team to have all five players shoot under 100, totaling 444 to go 6-0 on the day.
Athens (5-1) was second at 457, two strokes better than Mansfield (4-2). Wellsboro went 3-3 on the day with a 477, followed by Northern Tioga (504), Sayre (513) and Northeast Bradford.
Second behind Covey for the day was Northern Tioga freshman Gavin Howe, who had a 78. Wollenberg was next, followed by Corey lewis, who led Wellsboro with an 84 and Sayre’s Mike Gleockner with an 85.
Also shooting under 90 for Towanda were Pat henderson and Ben Griffith, with an 87 and an 88, respectively.
Brian Pelachik added an 86 for Athens and Mansfield was paced by Steve Toth, with an 86. Ben Alexander and Kevin Mahoney added scores of 87 and 88, respectively.
The league heads to Wellsboro Wednesday for its second meeting of the season.
