Tioga Center, N.Y. - There are moments in an athlete’s life that will forever be remembered. For some it may be making it to sectionals or districts. For others it could be winning sectionals or districts and going to states. Then there are the moments where, instead of being remembered for a team accomplishment, you are named for an individual accomplishment. This was the moment that two Tioga Central softball players have worked so hard for.
This year Lady Tigers pitcher Sarah Wayson battled her way through a single-season and school record 276 strikeouts which-added to her 110 from last year-give her a total of 389. That right there gives the perfect reason to be named to the All-state third team.
“It’s a good achievement and a cool honor,” said Wayson when asked how she felt about being named third team.
Wayson may have only been a freshmen last season, but she really gave many teams a run for their money.
When it came to what the key to Wayson’s success she said that it came down to “hard work and practice.”
Wayson’s pitching doesn’t stop once her high school softball season is up. She is a member of a travel team and in the off season practices three to four days a week.
So what are Wayson’s plans for next season?
“I just want us to improve upon what we did last season,” said Wayson.
Wayson’s teammate Marissa Miller was the other member of the Lady Tigers to be named All-state. Miller was named to the fourth team.
Wayson was really proud that Miller was named.
“It’s a really cool honor for her. She worked hard and deserves it. She’s a good teammate,” said Wayson.
Miller, a sophomore, was also trusted by Tioga Central’s coach Jim Wood to call the game from behind the plate.
“I was happy when I found out (about being named fourth team All-state). I thought it was a good accomplishment for me,” said Miller.
When Miller was asked what the key to her success was this season she said without any hesitation that it was her teammate Wayson.
“I think that between Sarah calling her own pitching and me being able to know where the hitter was standing helped us out a lot this season,” said Miller.
Miller’s plans for next season are much like her teammate’s, she wants to improve from last season and help take her team even further.
Miller is on the same travel team as Wayson, which helps her stay in shape for her high school seasons.
When it comes to advice for her teammates or anyone who would like this same accomplishment in the future, both Miller and Wayson said that it all comes down to working hard.
“You really have to work hard and put in more time then your normally would, and you will get better,” said Miller.
“You really need to practice hard and everything else will fall into place,” said Wayson.
