Let the shakeup begin. Some new faces mixed in with the familiar ones Saturday in IndyCar qualifying for Sunday’s Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen. Rookie Justin Wilson, over from the Champ Car World Series, was just edged out for the pole by Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe. Rounding out the top six were Rahal-Letterman Racing’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, three-time Glen champion Scott Dixon, Oriol Servia and Tony Kanaan.
Qualifying was determined by a series of “knockout rounds” to winnow the field of leaders down to six, which then competed in the Firestone Fast Six, a 10-minute segment to vie for the pole position.
Conspicuously absent from the Fast Six was Briscoe’s Penske teammate, Helio Castroneves, until Saturday the only driver to take an IndyCar pole at The Glen. Castroneves fell victim to a broken throttle cable on his first lap and did not record a time in qualifying. He will start at the back of the field, in 26th place.
Briscoe finished third when he last raced in the IndyCar Series at The Glen in 2006. He said, “I feel right at home here. I love this circuit. It's one of my favorites around the world."
Perennial Glen winner Dixon finds himself in a familiar slot – fourth. He started from the fourth position in both 2005 and 2006.
The Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen starts at 3:30 Sunday afternoon.
