ATHENS BOROUGH – On Sunday a plaque was dedicated in honor of the late Harold I. “Hal” Smith, located at the Diahoga Trail ADA ramp entrance on South River Street just across from the Valley Playland.

Athens Borough Mayor Skip Roupp presented the plaque, saying how “it’s very unusual for a small town to pay honor to an adopted citizen.”

Roupp noted that Hal would say his true home was in Lancaster County, but his adopted home was right in Athens.

“You can see in many, many areas the impact that he left on this community, and we’re very grateful for that,” said Roupp.

Roupp invited Hal’s grandchildren to unveil the plaque and read the dedication, which honors Hal’s “years of dedication as an Athens Borough council member, family man, fireman, band director, and friend.”
