BARTON — The Barton Town Board held a public hearing to adopt a change of the speed limit on Van Atta Road following a petition from residents and a decision from The New York State Department of Transportation.
The Barton Town Board recently petitioned to the state requesting a 40 MPH sign be implemented on Van Atta Road which would replace the current 55 MPH.
This change was requested in September after residents of the road presented a petition to the town board containing 20 signatures for the speed to be decreased to 40 MPH due to the high speed of traveling cars.
After several tests and considerations, NYS DOT determined that 45 MPH is the maximum linear speed for Van Atta Road between Notch Hill Road and Straw Hill Road on those portions that are not seasonal.
The Barton council adopted the local law to change the speed limit of Van Atta Road after no one from either the public or additional board members opposed.
Barton Town Supervisor Donald Foster noted that the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police will be enforcing the new speed limit.
