The scuffling San Diego Padres have claimed catcher Gary Sánchez off waivers from the New York Mets. The two-time All-Star was designated for assignment last week after playing in three games for the Mets. He went 1 for 6 with three strikeouts and an RBI, looking shaky at times behind the plate. With the disappointing Padres getting meager offensive production at catcher, they hope Sánchez can provide a boost. Austin Nola and Brett Sullivan have struggled with the bat. Luis Campusano is expected to be sidelined until around the All-Star break following left thumb surgery. San Diego is responsible for just over $1 million in salary for Sánchez after assuming his $1.5 million, one-year contract.

New York Yankees center fielder Harrison Bader left the series opener against the Seattle Mariners with right hamstring tightness after running out an infield single in the third inning. Bader easily beat the throw on the grounder in the hole between shortstop and third base, but was in discomfort standing on first base. He was replaced by Greg Allen. Bader is the latest injury concern for New York after first baseman Anthony Rizzo was held out of the lineup due to a stiff neck. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Rizzo “should be fine,” but the team was being cautious. Rizzo left Sunday’s win over San Diego after he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. on a pick off play that ended the sixth inning.

Pittsburgh’s Jack Suwinski hit two home runs into San Francisco Bay on Monday during a 14-4 loss to San Francisco, joining Barry Bonds as the only players to reach McCovey Cove twice in a game since Oracle Park opened 24 seasons ago. Suwinski’s hit solo homers in the seventh against Anthony DeSclafani and in the ninth off Brett Wisely, a position player who took the mound in one-sided game. Bonds homered twice into the water beyond the right-field wall against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 10, 2000, and off the Florida Marlins on May 18, 2022.
Rookie Patrick Bailey had four RBIs on his 24th birthday, boosting the San Francisco Giants to a 14-4 rout of Pittsburgh that dropped the Pirates under .500 for the first time since the opening weekend of the season. Pittsburgh (26-27) has lost 19 of 25 games after a 20-8 start. The Pirates’ only other time under .500 was at 1-2. Bailey, a catcher who debuted on May 19, was playing his ninth major league game. After hitting a go-ahead, two-run double against 43-year-old Rich Hill in a five-run second inning, he added a two-run homer in an eight-run seventh.
A person with knowledge of the decision says the Philadelphia 76ers have hired coach Nick Nurse weeks after he was fired by the Toronto Raptors. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the move. Nurse led the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship after they beat the 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Nurse will replace Doc Rivers, who was fired after he led the 76ers to their second straight 50-win season behind NBA MVP Joel Embiid but again failed to lead them to the Eastern Conference finals.
